Big Brother viewers and the 2005 general election

Stephen Coleman

University of Leeds, UK

This article explores the ways in which British Big Brother viewers experienced and responded to the 2005 UK general election. On the basis of 10 surveys, which included open-ended questions, the research aimed to discover how, if at all, Big Brother viewers translated sensitive and nuanced techniques for judging game-show contestants into the context of a political election campaign.

Key Words: citizenship • political participation • representation • the public
