‘Them’ and ‘Us’

This article analyses the ways in which Richard Hoggart, in The Uses of Literacy, evokes the class nuances of the working-class culture of his childhood while deprecating the popular culture of his own day. It is argued that despite his judgemental attitude, his literary evocation of the contemporary popular culture that he dislikes leaps to life in a manner comparable to Joyce’s Ulysses and overpowers his arguments against it.
